Champaign-Urbana Muslim Action Committee (CU MAC) applauds Senator Dick Durbin for his historic vote to block an additional $20 billion in U.S. military sales to Israel. This courageous decision demonstrates a commitment to addressing the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and prioritizing peace and accountability.
Senator Durbin’s leadership on justice and human rights issues has not gone unnoticed. Notably:
- On November 22, 2023, he called for a ceasefire in Gaza.
- As Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he convened a Hate Crimes Hearing on September 17, 2024, that honored the Wadee Resolution.
- On September 24, 2024, he led the unanimous Senate passage of the Wadee Resolution, a historic step in addressing hate crimes and affirming justice for victims.
As we commend these actions, CU MAC urges Senator Durbin to take further steps:
- Expand Efforts to End the Violence: Build on the call for a ceasefire by advocating for an end to U.S. funding that fuels violence and war in Gaza.
- Oppose H.R. 9495: This “nonprofit killer” bill threatens to suppress advocacy and humanitarian work by granting unchecked power to revoke the tax-exempt status of organizations. Its implications for silencing dissent and disrupting aid are deeply troubling. It has passed through the House and we urge Senator Durbin to oppose this bill in the Senate.
- Protect Palestinians Here and Abroad: Continue to champion humanitarian aid, fight against collective punishment, and stand against discriminatory policies that target Palestinians and those advocating for their rights.
We encourage everyone to join us in thanking the Senator for his courage while urging him to do even more to protect the lives of innocent Palestinians and uphold our nation’s commitment to human rights.
