About CU MAC

CU Muslim Action Committee is a community group dedicated to advocating for Palestinian rights and self-determination as well as other issues relevant to the Muslim community. We focus on education, advocacy, and community. Our work is central to Champaign Urbana and may extend to state-wide campaigns as it pertains to our community members and goals.

From Champaign-Urbana to Palestine, we believe the fight for self-determination in Palestine is hits close to home for our community. The human rights violations and the ongoing crisis in Gaza aren’t just distant news stories—they impact us directly. With our tax dollars in the mix, it’s important that we speak up and take action against these injustices.

Founded by members of the Champaign-Urbana community, CU MAC was founded to address advocacy issues right here at home. We’re committed to upholding the Islamic value of justice by making sure our community isn’t invested in, contributing to, or complicit in human rights violations.

OUR APPROACH

education

For change to be effective, we must be well informed.

CU MAC prioritizes educating the community on Palestine, Palestinians, and issues relevant to Arabs and Muslims both locally and globally. Visit events calendar.

advocacy

Speaking truth to power is central to CU MAC.

CU MAC works closely with elected officials and prominent institutions in CU to ensure the priorities and concerns of their Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim constituents are heard.

community

A people who gather together, grow together.

Fostering community allows us to learn together, to lean on each other, and to grow together. Community events focus on art, culture, and socialization.

OUR EVENTS

CU MAC cultivates events following our approach of education, advocacy, and community. We have regularly scheduled events for those interested in learning more, participating, and/or joining us. These include:

  • CU MAC Quarterly Community Events held in-person four times a year at various locations throughout the community including Central Illinois Mosque and Islamic Center (CIMIC) and the local Muslim American Society chapter (MAS UC). These are open to the greater CU community and provide timely information on whatever is currently happening.
  • Meet with a Palestinian CU MAC Welcome Call held virtually every three months (four times a year). These are laid back conversations intended as a means for folks to check in and on each other.
  • CU MAC Monthly Member Meetings held on the third Tuesday of every month at 4:30 pm and alternate between virtual and in-person. These are closed meetings to CU MAC team members only. Learn more about joining the CU MAC Team here.
