Why this work matters for Champaign-Urbana?
Illinois is home to more than half a million Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims. Thousands of them live in the Champaign-Urbana area. Their voices are important, and we insist on amplifying their concerns, demands, and needs.
Currently, we are the only organization in Champaign-Urbana dedicated to having these important conversations in our community and advancing changes and policies that improve the lives of Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims here and worldwide.
PALESTINE IS A LOCAL ISSUE
From CU to Palestine, the fight for self-determination in Palestine hits close to home for our community. The human rights violations and ongoing crisis in Gaza aren’t just distant news stories—they impact us directly. With our tax dollars in the mix, it’s important that we speak up and take action against these injustices.
ANTI-PALESTINIAN, ARAB, AND MUSLIM HATE AFFECTS US ALL
In our community, employees have been disciplined and/or fired for speaking out against the war crimes Israel has committed against Palestinians. In our Unit 4 schools, students have faced discrimination by teachers and administrators for being Palestinian. In our stores and within our council chambers, community members have been threatened with language like “watch your back” or “kill them all. This hate will not stop at Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims and in our current political climate those who hate are emboldened. We are all less safe.
